Thorne responds

Got an email today from former All Black Grahame Thorne correcting an error in Mark Reason’s column in today’s Southland Times.

Reason claimed the All Blacks of the 1965-69 era didn’t play France in France, but as Thorne quite rightly points out, they did just that in 1967.

Thorne remembers the game, played on November 25 and won 21-15 by the All Blacks, as being particularly brutal with Colin Meads coming in for some special attention from the French.

”It was the last Test the All Blacks played at Colombes Stadium,” Thorne recalled.

”Tree got kicked in the head by Plantefol, dirty bastard! Had 17 stitches without anesthetic !!! Fergie had an injection in his bum and broke the needle on the syringe!”

It was a simpler time, to be sure.
